DEADLY CLASS
#1
Coming to SyFY

The acclaimed Image series by writer Rick Remender and artist Wes Craig, Deadly Class, is getting a live-action adaptation. Of course, having the Russo Brothers (Community, The Avengers: Infinity War) as producers gives the new series instant mainstream credibility, but this television series is just further evidence that medium is gaining further traction beyond typical superhero fare.

Last year, SyFy found success in bringing Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson’s Happy! to live-action. If they can strike gold again with Deadly Class, perhaps the network could become a premiere destination for creator-owned comic book adaptations. Perhaps the rumored adaptations of Sex Criminals or The Wicked + The Divine? If Happy! proved anything, certain content is no longer restricted to premium channels like HBO or Showtime. If I can turn on a “regular” cable network and see a Christopher Meloni being anally penetrated by a castrated man wearing a strap-on, than I can expect some other weird shit in the future.

Also, since we are talking about SyFy obiligatory #SaveTheExpanse.

From Deadline: “Deadly Class is based on the critically acclaimed Image Comics graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, from The Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Sony Pictures TV and Universal Cable Production.

Adapted for television by Remender and Miles Orion Feldsott, Deadly Class is described as a coming of age journey full of ancient mystery and teen angst. Set in a dark, comic book world against the backdrop of late 80s counter culture, it follows a homeless teen recruited into a storied elite private school where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital.

Remender and Feldsott executive produce with Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and Mike Larocca (Spy). Adam Targum (Banshee) from Chipmunk Hill also served as executive producer on the pilot, along with Lee Toland Krieger (The Age of Adaline), who also directed.”
