A young indie studio reveals its Souls-like action-RPG named Mortal Shell with a striking, intense, and dark announcement trailer.

A surprisingly great game announcement came out of nowhere Wednesday morning, with indie developer Cold Symmetry unveiling Mortal Shell. Debuting an awesome announcement trailer, Cold Symmetry showed that Mortal Shell may just be the Dark Souls-inspired action-RPG fans of the genre have been waiting for.

By all appearances, Mortal Shell has all of the Dark Souls trappings. It features a dark, moody, and deeply unsettling style. It's telling a nightmarish story filled with monsters about mortality and resurrection. And it features tense gameplay where a single hit can make the difference between life and death. Death is never the end, though, it seems.

Elden Ring's Open Field Concept Explained

"The question that afflicts you isn't whether you can withstand this anguish, but why you desire it so," is one of Mortal Shell's taglines from its website– a very meta idea. Fans of Dark Souls-like games know they can overcome any challenge, but why they choose to do so is a question worth asking. Perhaps Mortal Shell will explore that idea in-game, or perhaps it's just an apt marketing pitch.

Mortal Shell's announcement trailer covers a lot of important details. The action-RPG is going to come to multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It's also not too far off, considering it's a recently announced game, as it'll be coming in 2020, according to Cold Symmetry's current plans.

Mortal Shell releases late 2020 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
