Frozen
In a move that surprised attendees and audiences alike, Square Enix premiered a new Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer at the Xbox E3 press conference this afternoon that focuses on the new world from the hit film Frozen.
The trailer begins with Sora, Donald, and Goofy attempting to adjust to the cold conditions in the Frozen world and fighting Heartless, before they eventually meet with the characters from the film, including Anna, Kristoff, Sven the reindeer, the lovable snowman Olaf, and Queen Elsa. After careful examination of the cutscenes, it appears that most, if not all, of the original voices from the film are returning for the game.
Later, the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer shows off a bit of gameplay, revealing the new Frozen-inspired keyblade which transforms into the Blizzard Blades, allowing Sora to skate on ice and unleash ice-based attacks. The gang also does a little sledding down a snowy mountain on Goofy’s shield, before showing off a fiery new summon, featuring Lion King’s Simba, and a new river rafting ride summon.
As far as the story goes, it appears that, like in the film, Queen Elsa is struggling with her place in the world, and Organization XIII is using that to try to sway her to the darkness. But, as the trailer shows, this won’t happen as long as Sora has something to say about it.
That’s not all. Audiences also get a glimpse at some tree swinging action in the Tangled world, using Rapunzel’s abnormally long hair, a portion of Gummi ship gameplay, and various scenes from other already-revealed worlds. Near the final portions of the trailer, we see a bit more into the fate of Aqua, who appears to have succumbed to the darkness, telling Mickey it’s “too late”, before revealing her cold, yellow eyes.
The end of the trailer displays the new 2019 release date for Kingdom Hearts 3. However, the revelation the game will be delayed until next year was revealed ahead of schedule during the Saturday performance of the Kingdom Heart’s concert.
The Frozen trailer is the latest in a long series of trailers that have been released since the game was announced. Three weeks ago, a gameplay demo was released that let certain media outlets have a hands-on experience exploring parts of the Toy Story world, where they teamed up with with Buzz Lightyear and Woody against Heartless, as well as the chance to battle an enormous Titan in the world of Hercules.
Kingdom Hearts 3 releases on January 29 for the PS4 and Xbox One.
