A gory trailer has just debuted for horror remake Day Of The Dead: Bloodline. Movie fans the world over mourned the loss of George Romero in 2017, with the iconic director passing away at age 77. Romero practically invented the zombie genre with 1968’s Night Of The Living Dead, and he would go on to make five sequels in the decades that followed. Romero also directed cult favorites Creepshow and Martin, and his work has influenced everyone from Edgar Wright to Quentin Tarantino.
Romero’s third zombie movie Day Of The Dead was released in 1985 and depicts an isolated group of survivors trying to stay alive against a rising tide of undead. The director originally envisioned a grander scale for the project – even labelling it “the Gone With The Wind of zombie movies” – but when he was unable to secure a large enough budget, he rewrote the script to make it more contained. It still remains the darkest and bloodiest of the series, however, with practical make-up effects that shock to this day.
Now a new version of Day Of The Dead is coming, and the trailer shows the makers aren’t skimping on the gore. Bloodline follows the broad concept of the original, with a group of survivors hiding out in a bunker while surrounded by zombies. Also like the original, the story features a zombie that scientists are training to tame. The trailer for Day Of The Dead: Bloodline features an impressive amount of practical bloodshed, but while the trailer touts itself as a bold reimagining, it doesn’t appear to be breaking much new ground.
This isn’t the first time Day Of The Dead has been remade. A critically panned remake starring Mena Suvari and Ving Rhames appeared in 2008, and despite being intended for cinemas it wound up going straight to DVD. Due to Rhames casting many assumed the film was some kind of follow-up to Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead remake, but the actor played a different character in Day. In 2005 a low budget, straight to video movie called Day Of The Dead 2: Contagium labeled itself a sequel to Romero’s film, but the director had nothing to do with it, and it’s been (rightfully) forgotten about.
While Day Of The Dead: Bloodline doesn’t appear to be holding back on carnage, it will need to do more to stand out from an increasingly crowded subgenre. Thanks to the likes of The Walking Dead, World War Z, the Resident Evil series and various others movies, video games and books, zombies are feeling a little played out. Unless Day Of The Dead: Bloodline has a unique angle on the story it’s not showing in the trailer, there’s little to set it apart from the many other straight to DVD zombie movies out there – besides the title.
Day Of The Dead: Bloodline is due for release on January 5th, 2018.

Finally a return to the zombie genre that isn't solely focused on an over saturation of BS human drama like The Walking Dead, or are full of PG13 family friendly garbage zombies like World War Z.
OMG YES bring on DAY OF THE DEAD: BLOODLINES, I hope it is as great as this trailer.
